An In-Depth of the Current 2023 NBA All-Star Voting Fan Returns

The NBA All-Star fan voting has commenced. As many may know, the NBA All-Star Starters are determined by 50% fan voting, 25% media voting, and 25% player voting.

A quick look at the current fan returns reveals some results that put a smile on their face and others that leave me scratching my head. The most interesting aspect of these returns is the 4-way battle for the starting Eastern Conference All-Star frontcourt. The leading vote-getters for the Eastern Conference frontcourt are Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, and Jayson Tatum. The fans got this absolutely right. Any 3-man combo out of those four guys would make a starting lineup that's completely legitimate.

However, Kevin Durant suffered a recent injury that may have indirectly determined who the Eastern Conference All-Star frontcourt. Durant's recent MCL Injury will reportedly keep him out for a month. Thus, Kevin Durant may not play in this year's All-Star game. In that case, the Greek Freak, Joel Embiid, and Jayson Tatum will definitely be the chosen ones.

All four players have between 3,000,000 and 4,500,000+ votes. To put things in perspective, the 5th leading vote-getter was Jimmy Butler, with less than 700,000 votes. Another thing that the fans got correct was the leading vote-getters for the guards in the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic are the leading vote-getters for the Western Conference, while Kyrie Irving and Donovan Mitchell are the leading vote-getters for the Eastern Conference. The fans were correct on this. This is especially true with regards to Donovan Mitchell and Luka Doncic.

Also, the fans were correct in giving guard Shai-Gilgeous Alexander so much love. Sha-Gilgeous Alexander has over 1,300,000 votes, and deservedly so. He is averaging over 30.0 ppg this season. However, the fans have made some decisions that I don't agree with.

While it is not surprising that Lebron James is the leading vote-getter in the West's frontcourt, he has over 1,000,000+ votes more than Nikola Jokic. The Denver Nuggets are in 1st place in the West, while the LA Lakers are in 13th place. Even though it's not surprising, I think Jokic should get some more love.

I'm blown away that I do not see Knicks PG Jalen Brunson represented in the top 10 of leading vote-getters among guards in the Eastern Conference. Jalen Brunson has averaged over 22.2 ppg and 6.5 assists per game. He has spearheaded the Knicks to 6th in the current Eastern Conference standings.
On the other hand, Derrick Rose has averaged 5.6 ppg in 26 games. Yet, he is 9th in fan voting among Eastern Conference guards. It is clear that these votes for Rose are based on past reputation rather than present circumstances.
