Michigan Wolverines Ground Game Is on Fire!
If there is a dark horse candidate for a national championship, one can argue that the undefeated Michigan Wolverines fit the bill. It is becoming increasingly apparent that their ground game is their calling card. The Michigan Wolverines ground game was on full display on Saturday as they routed the Penn State Nittany Lions 41-17. For the sake of brevity, this article will focus on the last two weeks. However, Michigan's ground game over the past couple of weeks is a continuation of what has happened throughout the season.
The straw that has stirred the drink is Blake Corum. Blake Corum’s amazing season has forced the college football world to consider him in Heisman Trophy discussions. In Michigan’s 31-10 road win over the Indiana Hoosiers, the Michigan Wolverines ran for 165 yards. Blake Corum had 25 carries, 124 yards, and a touchdown. Not surprisingly, this led them to control the time of possession. Michigan won the time of possession battle as they controlled the ball for nearly 38 minutes compared to Indiana's 22 minutes.
Michigan's performance on the ground against the Penn State Nittany Lions was the work of legends. The Penn State defense was obliterated by the Michigan Wolverines' offensive line at the line of scrimmage when it came to run-blocking. As a result, the Michigan Wolverines ran for an astounding 418 yards.
As he has done all season, Blake Corum showed up and showed out. Corum had 28 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns. In the 7 games played, Blake Corum has 118 carries for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns. Ultimately, the game effectively ended on Blake Corum’s 61-yard run to the endzone in the third quarter.
However, Blake Corum was not alone. Donovan Edwards had a game to remember as well. Donovan Edwards would lead the Michigan Wolverines running attack with 16 carries, 173 yards, and two touchdowns. Edwards would even beat his fellow teammate Blake Corum to the punch as far as long touchdown runs. After Penn State took a 17-16 lead in the third quarter, Donovan Edwards would have a 67-yard touchdown run that would put the Wolverines up for good.
Penn State was no match for this two-headed running back monster. The Michigan Wolverines outpaced the Nittany Lions in terms of the time of possession, 42 minutes compared to 18 minutes. There is no question that the Michigan Wolverines are going to be a handful to deal with now that opponents know that Blake Corum is not the only running back teams should worry about. Michigan will be a tough team to beat with this combo.
