The New York Yankees Can Not Let Aaron Judge Walk
It is no secret that Aaron Judge may be in the midst of the greatest individual season in the history of major league baseball. With 60 home runs, he is one home run from tying the American League home run record held by Roger Maris.
It is almost poetic that a New York Yankee may break the record held by another New York Yankee. Additionally, Aaron Judge is having a September to remember. He has been so dominant this month that it has propelled him to the lead for the American League Batting title.
As a baseball purist, it is still quite weird to see a player with 60 home runs and a gazillion RBIs be the lead batter. Ideally, the lead hitter should have great speed, get on base, and have an excellent batting average. Usually, a player with such a high HR/RBI total should be batting third or 4th in the lineup.
As unorthodox as the move is, Aaron Judge's AL-leading batting average mitigates how odd the move may be. It speaks to how he has carried the team on his strong shoulders. Aaron Judge should be the AL MVP. I don't believe it should be unanimous. Shohei Ohtani is having a historic season with his dominance on the mound and at the plate. Ultimately, Judge should take home that accolade.
I believe that the Yankees need to bring a BRINKS truck to pay Aaron Judge. If possible, they should get two trucks. It is mind-boggling that the most successful franchise in baseball (and in all of sports) has not found a way to lock a player that is headed full-speed ahead towards being as iconic a Yankee as Derek Jeter. Compared to the rest of the overall value of MLB players, Judge's current 19 million dollar salary with incentives almost seems like highway robbery, given that he's having a season of historic proportions. Inexplicably, the Yankees failed to lock Aaron Judge, and now he'll be testing the free-agent waters.
Historically, the New York Yankees have had a propensity to land some big fish in free agency. Examples include Alex Rodriguez, David Cone, Hideki Matsui, and Jason Giambi. If the Yankees resign Aaron Judge, one could argue that this re-acquisition will end up more significant than all the aforementioned big free-agent signings of the past. There is no doubt that there will be a bidding war of epic proportions for the services of Aaron Judge. Nevertheless, this is a bidding war that the Yankees cannot afford to lose. If Aaron Judge leaves, it will seriously damage the morale of Yankees fans. It is a nightmare scenario for Aaron Judge to wear another team's jersey. I really hope that this nightmare does not come true.\
