Victor Wembanyama & The NBA Tanking Issue
It is no secret that Victor Wembanyama looks like he will be the prized possession in next year's NBA Draft. It became pretty clear with his two performances against the international friendlies against the G-League Ignite. Wembanyama had 37 points in a losing effort against the G-League Ignite on October 5th, 2022. The next day, Wembanyama would follow that up with 36 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots to lead the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 to a 112-106 win.
Wembanyama is a once-in-a-lifetime player. Steph Curry referred to him as a "2K Create A Player".
The issue of tanking has risen to the forefront as a source of concern for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. In a recent Q&A session with Phoenix Suns employees, Adam Silver discussed possible solutions for tanking. In the same conversation, he said that he understood why teams would want to go that route to get what he describes as a "once-in-a-generation player." This conversation was in response to a question regarding the issue that one Phoenix Suns employee raised during the session. Silver informed the Phoenix Suns employees that tanking was a severe issue that has led to hundreds of meetings. Silver stated that the league has notified teams and will closely monitor the issue.
Adam Silver also informed the employees that he had considered a unique solution to the issue. It involves a concept that is commonly used in international soccer leagues. It is called
relegation. Relegation occurs when the worst-performing teams are sent down to a lower league while the top-performing teams in the lower division are promoted to the upper league.Silver brought up a potential scenario in which the two worst teams in the NBA would be relegated to the G-League while the two top teams in the G-League would be promoted to the NBA. Such a move would incentivize teams to play hard throughout the season.
However, the commissioner concluded that such a solution would be "destabilizing" to the NBA because it would screw up its business model. The league has recently addressed the tanking issue by changing their draft lottery odds so that the three worst teams have the highest percentage of getting the #1 pick in the draft.
