NFL Logo History
The official NFL shield logo was established around 1921. Unfortunately the designer of the logo has never been credited and remains a mystery today. The NFL logo has gone through several variations since it's inception but the changes has been vary subtle. Below we go through each NFL logo change. It is important to note that in the earlier logos there were 25 stars compared to the 8 stars in the current logo. No one knows what the 25 stars represented back then, however the 8 current stars represent the 8 different divisions in the National Football League.
NFL Logo Change Timeline
1960 NFL logo: The NFL shield had a slightly wider and sharper points at the to, with a thin outline overall frame. There were 25 stars present on the blue background as well as well as a white silhouette football with red lace & seam lines. The "NFL" letters are slightly thin and red behind a white background with blue pinstripes.
1970 NFL Logo: Likely the most notable of the four logo variations is similar to the 1960's inception with a few detail changes. The wideness at the top of the shield has been reduced with the sharp points still being visible. The "NFL" letters has been thickened and a font change is visible. The background behind the letters is more of a pink-ish white with the former pinstripes being removed. The silhouette football lace & seam line has changed from red to blue. The overall logo has also been faded.
1984 NFL Logo: The vibrant color of the NFL shield has returned to the logo compared to the previous 1970 faded appearance. The two outer sharp points at the top of the shield has been reduced. The frame of the NFL shield has also been thickened. Other aspects of the logo remained the same such as the silhouette football and its lace & seam lines and the 25 stars at the top of the shield.
2008 NFL Logo: The current logo has went through many changes compared to the what it looked like in 1984. Most notably the 25 stars at the top of the shield has been replaced with 8 stars representing the 8 divisions of the NFL. The silhouette football has also changed its look entirely. It's tilted upright (in a field goal or punt position) and the lace lines are much larger than those present in previous logos. The "NFL" letters has also changed font again losing the curled up "L" that has dominated the previous versions of the logo and the red is sightly lighter.
